Situation

The group stage is already finished. The quarter-finals have the 8 top teams shown above, which will compete in two-legged series.

What’s hot

Considering the Chinese Super League is already finished, let’s analyze the rest of the leagues to decide where to focus our attention for the second half of the season.

Looking at the line-up of each league, it is difficult to say which one has the best players. While the German League has most of the best European players, the Polish Super League has emerged as a top league with many Asian players who are performing pretty well. The Russian League has fewer top names, condensed in a couple of teams, but play-offs will offer amazing matches between very experienced players.

The European Champions League has the best teams and players from the other leagues, but matches aren’t as frequent, especially now that it is in the quarter-final stage.

All leagues have a play-off stage, except the French League. Moreover, according to the current standings, it could have everything decided some rounds before the end. The rest of the leagues will offer the spectators the chance to watch matches between the best teams and players, usually over one weekend.

The best city

The following interactive map shows all the aforementioned teams with their playing locations. Please note that the Russian Premier League only includes the locations where the first 3 dates have been played and the European Champions League only includes the Swedish team that is not participating in the rest of the leagues.

The Russian Premier League, despite having some of the world’s top players, does not have a proper regular season. Therefore, you must be lucky enough to have one of the 6th rounds they play at your city. Given Russia’s size, you must be quite lucky.

The French standings seem to have a clear leader, which will probably make it easy to achieve the competition title. The Chinese Super League is already over, and considering China’s size too, the chances of travelling to watch away matches are reduced.

Let’s decide then between German and Polish cities. If you want to regularly watch the best players, Düsseldorf and Mazowieckie are the most appealing options. Both of them have their league-leading team having to defend against their chasing opposition so excitement is guaranteed.

However, an unmentioned fact should be considered: Borussia Düsseldorf will be playing the Champions League quarter-finals later this month. This will – hopefully – allow the German supporters to see the best European teams coming to their city for at least one more round. And last but not least, the 2017 World Championships will be held in Düsseldorf at the end of May.

Bearing in mind all the reasons provided, we can conclude that, nowadays, the best city in the world to watch live table tennis is Düsseldorf.
